What is household humidity?

Dec 1, 2025

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. In everyday life, as in weather forecasts, we usually refer to relative humidity (RH). This is a percentage value that indicates how saturated the air is with moisture compared to the maximum amount it can hold.

What is household humidity?

Air humidity levels — indicators and their meaning:

  • 0% RH — extremely dry, almost unattainable in residential conditions.
  • 40–60% RH — comfortable level for humans in living spaces.
  • 100% RH — the air can no longer "hold" moisture, leading to condensation: mirrors, tiles, and windows fog up.

Condensation appears when warm, moisture-laden air comes into contact with a cold surface (glass, mirror, wall). The air cools rapidly, and its ability to hold moisture decreases. The excess water vapor, for which there is no longer space, transitions from a gaseous state to a liquid state, settling as tiny droplets — condensation.

Humidity norms:

  • Comfortable level — 40–60% RH for most rooms, including the bathroom.
  • Short-term increase in humidity (for example, after a shower in the bathroom) to 70–90% RH is normal. However, it is important to ensure a quick return to the comfortable 40–60% RH.
  • Dangerous level — prolonged maintenance of readings above 65–70% RH can lead to the appearance of mold, musty smells, and damage to finishes.

The fan is not powerful enough. With a properly functioning exhaust system, the fan should reduce humidity to a comfortable 40–60% within 20–30 minutes after taking a shower. If this does not happen, the fan's capacity is likely insufficient for your bathroom. In this case, it is recommended to choose a more powerful model or increase the fan's operating time using a timer.

No fresh air supply in the bathroom. For the exhaust fan to remove humid air, new air must enter the room from outside. Check if there is a sufficient gap under the door (about 1–1.5 cm).

Blocked ventilation duct or grille. Dust, cobwebs, and grease significantly reduce draft. Regularly clean the ventilation grille and check that the fan's back-draught shutter opens easily.

The room is too cold. Cold walls, floors, and mirrors actively condense moisture and dry slowly. Even a small amount of additional heating will speed up evaporation.

Wet towels and rugs. Bunched-up wet towels and rugs act as moisture reservoirs, constantly saturating the air. To help them dry faster, spread them out flat instead of leaving them in a heap.

Fan operating time after leaving the room using a timer.

Maintaining optimal humidity (40–60% RH) is a key factor for a healthy and comfortable home climate. The most effective solution for dealing with long-lasting dampness is modern fans that feature a humidity sensor (such as VentEurope models with HT and SHT options).

Such devices automatically turn on when humidity rises and turn off when the air returns to normal. This eliminates the need for manual control and guarantees that your bathroom will always be fresh and comfortable. You no longer need to remember to turn the fan on or off — smart technology does it all for you.
